Few days back many news agencies reported J&J recalled 33,000 bottles of its baby powder lot bearing the number 22318RB after health regulators found traces of asbestos. Its not uncommon that we hear such reports from different products which undergo recall to manage the risk and lawsuits. Usually such analysis of products when they are in supply chain is a critical requirement for many companies. There have products for such especially for discreate industries like Product Compliance in SAP EHSM, however recently SAP launched Product Marketability and Chemical Compliance product which offers many functionalities which will help organizations meeting the compliance for raw materials as well finished products along with checks for SDS, label and packaged / unpackaged Dangerous goods. Sometime back I have mentioned about coming in details about the Product Marketability Product. I had an opportunity to check product closely outside my company as my personal hobby. I would like to list them here and look forward to contribute a video post sometime in future.

The Product marketability and Chemical Compliance is recommended to use for managing Marketability & chemical compliance, classifying as per DG regulations and managing Safety Data sheets and labels, even it offers tracking substance quantities. So it is known any compliance has a specific needs of compliance purpose and requirement, which is nothing but obligations user needs to fulfil and is a business requirement such as to which use it is recommended. Similarly, a regulation speaks about laws, directives which defines such obligations. For example, in the above J&J scenario, it is asbestos absence which is recommended by regulatory requirement like TSCA besides many other asbestos use / controls regulations from EPA. So ideally the compliance purpose is to meet the regulatory requirements.

Now coming to Product Marketability scenario, it is integrated into business scenarios like Product compliance in material master – where product master defines whether the product is relevant for products checks or not and its requirement for detailed assessment. Product stewardship specialist will be informed about the new compliance relevant products and will check along with regional experts for ensuring checks and relevant compliance. When a product master is updated with compliance relevant indicator with “YES”, it triggers a request for new compliance view for the distribution with sell in depending on the sales organization, similarly for production it helps in production countries and regions.

Besides product compliance in Product Master, it also has integration in sales and delivery which ensures only material those are marked as valid compliance checks are considered. Necessary checks are run in sales and system issues warning or blocks the document if needed, which can be released with exceptions. It determines both item status and header status of sales document to assess the product marketability. Similarly, for processing checks during delivery it checks the marketability data and also blocks. This compliance information can be easily searched by using Fiori Apps tiles like Compliance view of Raw material or Compliance View of Products.

A compliance pattern is used to manage the compliance requirement which includes simple documentation which does not require calculation, substance list checks is used for unpackaged products and raw materials against compliance requirement. There are series of steps for Substance list assessment right from determination of affected substance lists till calculation of compliance status of unpackaged product. This has many rules for identification of affected root substances, substance variants and affected listed substance groups which also determines affected listed substances with variants, listing complete assessment status of each affected substance with issues etc. Substance list checks can also be extended for raw material and supplier raw materials.

There are many tiles which are available like assessing the compliance requirement for products, Raw materials, compliance assessment – substance lists and raw materials. I found the display of compliance by means of maps for assessing products for markets very interesting. Besides these it contains apps for Configuration of chemical compliance which lists key apps for setting up the system like Manage listed substances, apply regulations and activating compliance requirements for product marketability. Apply Dangerous goods and apply regulations safety data sheets shows the regions where selling allowed or not.

The other tile which is available include the one with Product compliance management which lists Product compliance events, assessing product markets and assessing product requests from logistics. It also shows some useful statistics around impact on suppliers, impact on production and impact on sales with a real time figure.

The other tiles which are relevant for product marketability include the ones showing the compliance information of products, Raw material compliance management which highlights tiles to manage supplier compliance for raw materials, managing raw material compliance and assessing the compliance requirements for raw materials.

Now coming to implementation, you can implement the product by importing the best practices using RDS for R&D which includes the component 31J – Chemical Compliance In sales, 31G – Chemical Compliance approvals for purchased material and supplier and finally 31H – Assess marketability of a product. SAP offers content for the compliance which contains compliance requirements and compliance purpose which can be selected activated for the requirement. You can activate the required compliance requirements and event manually create to extend the list.

There are configuration settings ported with best practices however you can manually configure the system as well. The configuration requires ensuring settings in Product Safety are available for needed to be created like number ranges, specification types, identification types, specifying value assignment types, and specifying the responsible units from the Product compliance configuration options. The manual configuration which needed to be done for Product Compliance include activating the product compliance flag, activation of business features which ensures product compliance in multiple places, specifying the composition types, activating notification providers, event type linkages etc.

Besides Product compliance there are scenario for managing the dangerous goods management like Unpackaged dangerous goods which shows option to analyse unpackaged dangerous goods and if you want to check for dangerous goods selectively for your authorization it can be under my un packaged dangerous goods. The bar graphs highlighting the Classification by purpose, Calculating compliance requirement and donut maps of classification of processing status and overall classification level as whether dangerous goods or not is also very interesting.

There is so much to assess this especially around the substance list management like how the aggregation works, how to make correct assignment how SAP delivered substance assignments work and how those can be extended with company specific lists and the way assessment status is highlighted which can only be understood by actually working on the system. To wrap up system comes with front end roles like Product Steward specialist, master data specialist and Dangerous goods specialist along with specific business catalogs and Fiori tiles which can further be understood by reading the SAP Help content, Fiori reference library and configuration and best practices guides.
